Instructions
 

Step 1: Preheat & Prep

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients

  • Sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg in a large mixing bowl.

Step 3: Combine Wet Ingredients

  • Add shortening, ketchup, and ⅔ cup milk to the dry mixture. Beat for 2 minutes on medium speed.

Step 4: Add Eggs and Remaining Milk

  • Add eggs and remaining ⅓ cup milk. Beat for 2 more minutes until smooth and creamy.

Step 5: Add Flavorings

  • Fold in chopped walnuts and grated lemon rind.

Step 6: Bake
