Momma’s Classic Million Dollar Chocolate Fudge

Million Dollar Fudge
Momma’s Million Dollar Fudge is a classic old-fashioned candy that was especially popular in mid-20th century kitchens and community cookbooks. Known for its rich, chocolatey sweetness balanced by marshmallows and butter, this recipe is a nostalgic treat often found at family gatherings and holiday tables. Unlike quick fudge recipes, this one combines stovetop cooking with a careful pour of hot syrup over marshmallows and chocolate to achieve a smooth, melt-in-your-mouth texture. Its name reflects the indulgence and decadence that made it a prized recipe for celebrations.

Ingredients

  • 4 ½ cups sugar
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 12 oz evaporated milk
  • 7 oz marshmallow crème
  • 12 oz semisweet chocolate chips
  • 12 oz German sweet chocolate bar (chopped)
  • 2 cups nuts (chopped, walnuts or pecans, optional)
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Pan

  • Butter a 13×9-inch pan (or two 9-inch square pans) and set aside.

Step 2: Cook Syrup

  • In a large saucepan, combine sugar, butter, and evaporated milk. Bring to a rolling boil, stirring constantly, for 5 minutes.

Step 3: Mix Fudge Base

  • Remove from heat. Add marshmallow crème, chocolate chips, and German sweet chocolate. Stir until completely melted and smooth.

Step 4: Add Flavorings

  • Stir in vanilla extract and nuts if using.

Step 5: Pour & Set

  • Quickly pour fudge mixture into prepared pan. Smooth the top with a spatula.

Step 6: Cool & Cut

  • Allow fudge to cool at room temperature until firm, about 2–3 hours. Cut into squares to serve.

Tips

  • Use a heavy-bottomed pan to prevent scorching while boiling the sugar mixture.
  • Test doneness by dropping a bit of syrup into cold water (soft-ball stage) if unsure of timing.
  • Add different nuts such as walnuts or pecans, or omit nuts entirely.
  • Line the pan with parchment for easy lifting and clean slicing.
  • For deeper chocolate flavor, mix semi-sweet and bittersweet chocolate.
  • Add 1 teaspoon espresso powder to intensify chocolate taste.
  • Stir constantly while boiling to prevent burning and grainy texture.
  • Let fudge cool completely before cutting to get clean squares.
  • Store tightly covered at room temperature; refrigerate for firmer texture.
