Coconut Candy Balls with Chocolate Coating

Candy
This vintage no-bake candy recipe reflects a classic mid-century approach to homemade sweets, combining pantry staples like sweetened condensed milk, coconut, and nuts into a rich, creamy confection. Often made for holidays, potlucks, or special gatherings, this style of candy emphasizes simplicity and indulgence. The mixture is chilled, shaped into bite-sized pieces, and dipped in melted chocolate or butterscotch coating, sometimes enhanced with paraffin wax for a glossy finish. Its texture is soft and chewy inside with a crisp outer shell, making it a nostalgic treat that’s easy to prepare in batches and perfect for sharing.

  • 1 stick margarine, (softened)
  • 2 lbs powdered sugar
  • 12 oz chocolate chips
  • 6 oz butterscotch chips (optional)
  • 1 block paraffin wax (optional, for coating)

Instructions

Step 1: Mix Base Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, combine sweetened condensed milk, coconut, chopped nuts, vanilla, and softened margarine.
  • Mix thoroughly until evenly combined.

Step 2: Add Sugar

  • Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing until a thick, dough-like consistency forms.

Step 3: Chill Mixture

  • Cover and refrigerate the mixture for 1–2 hours until firm enough to handle.

Step 4: Shape Candy

  • Roll the chilled mixture into small balls or desired shapes.
  • Place on a lined tray.

Step 5: Melt Coating

  • In a double boiler or heat-safe bowl over simmering water, melt chocolate chips (and butterscotch chips if using).
  • Add a small amount of paraffin wax for a smooth coating, if desired.

Step 6: Dip Candy

  • Using a toothpick or fork, dip each candy piece into the melted coating.
  • Let excess drip off.

Step 7: Set and Serve

  • Place dipped candies on wax paper and allow to set until firm.
  • Store in an airtight container.

Tips

  • Use pecans or walnuts for best flavor
  • Skip paraffin wax and use coconut oil for a more natural coating
  • Add mini chocolate chips to the filling for extra texture
  • Roll in shredded coconut instead of dipping for a quicker version
  • Use dark chocolate for a less sweet finish
  • Chill shaped candies before dipping for easier handling
  • Add a pinch of salt to balance sweetness
  • Try almond extract instead of vanilla for variation
  • Store in freezer for longer shelf life
