Self-Frosted Cake is a clever mid-century home-baking favorite that creates its own topping while baking, eliminating the need for separate icing. Popular in American kitchens from the 1940s–1960s, this cake was valued for both thrift and simplicity. A basic vanilla batter is poured into a pan, then topped with sugar, chocolate, and warm liquid that transforms in the oven into a fudgy, sauce-like layer. The result is a tender, lightly sweet cake with a rich, pudding-style top that feels indulgent without extra work. Variations like lemon or coconut were often added, making this recipe adaptable, comforting, and perfect for everyday desserts or potlucks.
