These "French or Old English Cookies" are a nostalgic recipe that reflects the hearty, flavorful desserts of old-world Europe. Shared by Mrs. E.D. Wilkinson, the recipe combines pantry staples with cold coffee, a typical ingredient in traditional European baking that adds depth without overpowering sweetness. This type of cookie, more like a soft bar or cake square, echoes old English tea-time treats and rustic French desserts. The use of warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, combined with raisins, brings a comforting aroma and taste. With its unique no-mix method and dense, chewy texture, it’s a wonderful heritage recipe ideal for gatherings or holiday spreads.
