Better Than Sex Cake

Better Than Sex Cake
Better Than Sex Cake is a classic retro dessert from mid-century American kitchens, combining tropical pineapple, vanilla pudding, and whipped cream over a moist yellow cake base. Its name comes from its rich, irresistible flavor and the indulgent layering of creamy and fruity components. The crushed pineapple topping creates a refreshing contrast to the soft cake, while the vanilla pudding and whipped cream make it luxuriously creamy. It’s a favorite for parties, potlucks, and family gatherings because it’s simple, impressive, and always gets rave reviews.

Ingredients

For the Cake Base:

  • 1 pkg yellow cake mix (about 15.25 oz)
  • 3 large eggs (as per cake mix instructions)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil (as per cake mix instructions)
  • 1 cup water (as per cake mix instructions)

For the Pineapple Layer:

  • 20 oz crushed pineapple (undrained)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar

For the Pudding Layer:

  • 1 pkg instant vanilla pudding mix (3.4 oz)
  • 3 cups cold milk

For the Whipped Cream Topping:

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar

Instructions

Step 1: Bake the Cake

  • Preheat oven according to cake mix package instructions.
  • Prepare yellow cake mix as directed on the box.
  • Pour batter into a 9×13-inch baking dish and bake until golden brown and fully set, about 30 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes.

Step 2: Prepare Pineapple Mixture

  • In a medium saucepan, combine crushed pineapple (with juice) and sugar.
  • Simmer over medium heat for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove from heat and set aside.

Step 3: Add Pineapple Layer

  • While the cake is still warm, poke several holes across the top using the handle of a wooden spoon.
  • Pour the warm pineapple mixture evenly over the cake, letting it soak in.
  • Allow the cake to cool completely.

Step 4: Make Vanilla Pudding

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together instant pudding mix and cold milk.
  • Beat until smooth and thickened.
  • Spread pudding evenly over the cooled pineapple-covered cake.

Step 5: Prepare Whipped Cream

  • In a chilled bowl, beat heavy cream until it begins to thicken.
  • Add vanilla extract and powdered sugar gradually.
  • Continue whipping until stiff peaks form.

Step 6: Final Assembly

  • Spread whipped cream evenly over the pudding layer.
  • Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

Tips

  • Chill at least 2 to 4 hours; overnight gives the best flavor and moisture.
  • For a lighter version, use 2% milk and reduced-fat pudding.
  • Add toasted coconut or chopped nuts on top for texture.
  • Substitute chocolate pudding for vanilla for a richer twist.
  • Use juice-packed pineapple (not syrup) to control sweetness.
  • Add a splash of rum extract to the pineapple mixture for flavor depth.
  • Line the pan with parchment for easier slicing and serving.
  • Make smaller holes in the cake if you want more even soaking.
  • For extra pineapple flavor, don’t drain the pineapple before simmering with sugar.
  • Serve very cold for neat slices, or slightly chilled for ultra-soft texture.
