Onion Clam Dip
Onion Clam Dip is a retro appetizer classic, born from the convenience foods of the mid-20th century. Combining the savory depth of Lipton's onion soup mix with the briny flavor of canned minced clams, it creates a bold and creamy dip perfect for chips, crackers, or crudité. This crowd-pleaser gained popularity in cocktail parties and potlucks throughout the 1950s and ’60s, admired for its simplicity and zesty flavor. The touch of clam juice heightens the seafood essence without overwhelming the creamy onion base.

Ingredients

  • 1 pint sour cream
  • 1 pkt Lipton Onion Soup ( or California Dip Mix)
  • 6.5 oz minced clams (1 can, drained, reserve juice)
  • 1-2 tsp clam juice (optional, to taste)

Instructions

Step 1: Mix Base

  • Combine sour cream and onion soup mix in a medium bowl. Stir until fully blended.

Step 2: Add Clams

  • Fold in drained minced clams. Add a small amount (1–2 tsp) of reserved clam juice for extra flavor if desired.

Step 3: Chill

  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to allow flavors to blend.

Tips

  • Add extra minced clams for a stronger briny flavor.
  • Stir in a splash more clam juice if you prefer a thinner, more savory dip.
  • Add chopped green onions or chives for freshness.
  • Mix in lemon zest for a bright citrus lift.
  • Add a dash of hot sauce for subtle heat.
  • Use Greek yogurt for part of the sour cream to lighten the dip.
  • Fold in finely minced celery for crunch.
  • Serve with potato chips, crackers, rye bread, or raw vegetables.
  • Chill overnight for even better flavor development.
