Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter (softened to room temperature)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 ⅞ cups all-purpose flour
  • 6 milk chocolate bars (1.65 oz each)
  • 1 cup toasted almonds (chopped, or pecans)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Pan

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Lightly grease a 14x11-inch baking pan or line with parchment paper.

Step 2: Make the Dough

  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the egg yolk and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
  • Gradually beat in the flour until a smooth, well-blended dough forms.

Step 3: Bake the Base

  • Spread the dough evenly into the prepared pan.
  • Bake for 15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.

Step 4: Add Chocolate Layer

  • Remove from the oven and immediately place the unwrapped chocolate bars evenly over the hot crust.
  • Let them stand for 3 minutes until softened, then spread the chocolate evenly with a spatula.

Step 5: Finish with Nuts

  • Sprinkle the toasted almonds or pecans evenly over the melted chocolate.
  • Let cool completely before cutting into 40 squares.

Tips

  • Use toasted pecans or almonds for the best flavor and crunch.
  • Line pan with parchment for easy removal and cleaner slicing.
  • Score lightly before fully set to make perfectly even squares.
  • Substitute dark or semi-sweet chocolate bars if you prefer less sweetness.
  • Add a pinch of salt to dough for a sweet-salted contrast.
  • Make ahead: these bars store well for several days in an airtight container.
  • Chill briefly in refrigerator to speed chocolate setting.
  • Drizzle white chocolate over top for a decorative finish.
  • Cut into smaller bites for candy-style pieces on a dessert tray.
