Ingredients

  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 pkg yellow cake mix
  • 1⅔ cups applesauce
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon sugar (for pan)
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Cinnamon Sugar

  • Mix together ½ cup sugar and 2 tsp cinnamon. Set aside.

Step 2: Make Cake Batter

  • Prepare yellow cake mix as directed on package, but substitute 1⅓ cups applesauce for the oil/water as instructed. Add 3 eggs and mix until smooth.

Step 3: Prepare Pan

  • Grease a Bundt pan and sprinkle with 1 tbsp cinnamon sugar.

Step 4: Layer Batter

  • Pour half the batter into the prepared pan. Sprinkle with half of the cinnamon sugar mixture. Add the remaining batter on top, then sprinkle with the rest of the sugar mixture.

Step 5: Bake

  • Bake at 350°F for 40–45 minutes. Cool 15 minutes in the pan.

Step 6: Make Honey Syrup

  • In a small saucepan, combine ¼ cup honey, 1 tbsp water, and 1 tbsp lemon juice. Bring to a boil and simmer briefly.

Step 7: Finish Cake

  • Remove cake from pan, prick gently with a toothpick, and pour warm honey syrup evenly over the cake.

Tips

  • Substitute oil with applesauce exactly as written for a lighter cake (already used in recipe).
  • Add chopped apples to the batter for extra fruit texture.
  • Use dark brown sugar in the swirl for deeper caramel notes.
  • Dust the cooled cake with powdered sugar instead of (or in addition to) honey syrup.
  • Replace honey syrup with maple syrup glaze for a different flavor.
  • Add ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans for crunch.
  • Use spice cake mix instead of yellow cake for a stronger spice profile.
  • Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for dessert service.
  • Line Bundt pan thoroughly to prevent sticking, grease and flour well.
  • Store tightly wrapped; flavor improves the next day as syrup soaks in.
